Montreal Canada is in the mixtape review building once again. DJ Denox putting in that serious work....mixtapes, production, and one of the most consistient supporters of MCs who are bubblin' below the radar of the major lables. We Break The Hits is the series. The shit is a double mixtape and we're talking over sixty songs on each CD...all MCs who deserve that shine.
Do not expect 120+ highlights on here but these are the joints that caught my ear. "Harder" by Malicous and Mickey Dangerous is a hit. There's no other way to describe it. That hook is classic club material. Ru Spits broke shit down lovely on "Ratchet Luv"; classic mixtape music. The anthem of anthem's pops up with Rain's "Carolina Fly"....club anthem at it's finest. Wordsmith and Jaz-O got their 1-2 thing off with "A Rap Retrospective". Same with Custom Made on "LAX". I might be the only one but I can't fuck with "Brown Paper Bag"...shit is clock radio speaker weak to me. Good to hear Belly drop some bars along side Nina Sky on "Don't Be Shy". That cat got bars for days. Eric Donnel was kinda smooth on "Never Had It So Good". Denox casually switches shit up to the R&B side like a vet. Cats is sleeping on Rosco's joint with AKon and Jadakiss..."You Feel Me" is that feel good music for the summer. The sleeper join of the first CD is most def Raptile, Young Zee and Rah Digga on "Blastin Ya Stereo"....Rah Digga can and will eat most of these rap dudes alive. Don't forget Tyte Wurk on "I'm On It'...another anthem for that ass. Labba laid the foundation for disc 2. "Da Big Hit" might not be a hit but its raw rhyming at its best. The shit caught fire with Talib Kweli on "Hot Thing" into Intense's banger "Realize". Intense has the potential to do big things man. "Hip Hop Police" is cool, def a friendly track...radio, club, white girl type of friendly. Def good to hear "Bang It Out" on here...Papoose will do his thing regardless of the haters. The sleeper track on the second CD is Grit Boys with "Fresh". This joint sounded so good in my ride I rewound it 5 times. My speakers thank you.
I give Denox all the props in the world because he's truely rep'n for the underdog on here all while showing a lil skill and highlighting the music proper like. There really ain't much left to say that hasn't already been done. Know this tho, DJ Denox putting in work with a ton quality MCs while the rest of ya'll DJs are Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. (8/20/07)
