Let me make something real clear to all you bitch ass DJs out there. If your blessed enough to have da kid Touché Turtle listen to your mixtape and then afterwards actually write something about your mixtape then simply just be happy with that. I don't get around to writing reviews often enough to have DJs make some kind of counter point rebuttal. If you mad about what I write about your shit then go cry on your baby mothers shoulder. Cause I don't gives a fuck bout your response. The fans been asking and it's time to bring Rap Mullet back to the era of shitting on muthafuckas!
Let's get into this Aphilliates with Gnarls Barkley mixtape. I gotta admit I'm a fan of what Ceelo and Danger Mouse are doing with Gnarls. I haven't even really had a chance to hear they whole album. So, this mixtape must be the next best thing. Shit pops off nicely with Go To Church where Ceelo shines on the gospel tip. Then they get into the over played Crazy. After skipping past that joint I got back into some fly shit called Love All The Time. I think I might of heard this one already but shit is hot. Definitely sounds like they used an old '80's hit as a blue print on that one. At a certain point the Aphilliates play some classic Ceelo material from the past. Which is good but I wasn't expecting that this was going to be a best of Ceelo Green mix. Suicide is another joint I'm feelin. Danger Mouse really went crazy on the drum programming on that one. While I'm guessing most of the songs I've mentioned made the album but this exclusive joint they got has got a nice laid back funk vibe to it. Childz Play is on some other other shit but some how it's got me hooked.
If your a mixtape head then your probably accustom to DJ Drama and the Aphilliates' formula. Really I'm guessing they so busy that there isn't much time to put any kind of artistry into the mix. Just play the songs, yell over a few and drop a few trademark "Cannon" samples and then claim you heard it here first. I ain't mad at that but really I think it's one of those things that cheapens mixtapes. People don't even remember what mixing is anymore. These days it's about who got a hot cover and who's yelling over the newest song of the week. It's not like that's a new revelation but I just know that Drama and AMG could put the DJ skills back into they mixtapes and it would be much more enjoyable. I would have given this mixtape 3 tapes based on the music alone but with only 15 tracks and no mixing I just feel ripped off. (8/9/06)
