Look what we have here. I'm glad cats sent me a hard copy because I'm only accepting downloads from certain cats now. If your product isn't in the streets YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR THING! The one thing you can never miss is an AAE project. Checkmate ensures you see and hear everything that comes out that camp...I ain't mad at it either. Cats doing what they have to do but most important...that product is in the streets as well.
I obviously can't just ignore Checkmates song which happens to be the projects jump off point. "Hottest In Da Freezer"...hmmmm. I'll tell you why I don't like this song. His voice becomes one with the beat. You might think that's a good thing but it's not. His voice doesn't stand out and that's a problem. Mabye it's just a level's thing and can be fixed but it sounds very average the way it is on this mixtape. I'm fucking with Bun B on "Ridin' Down The Block". You know a song got bass when your headphones are rattling. I don't know if it was the mix down for the conversion to MP3 but the quality on "How Texas Is" by Check and Gutta is wack. It could be the beat used too but I had a hard time hearing what Gutta had to say but that last line was the shit..."I'm in a great space like cars with handicap stickers". I can't say I'm a huge Jeezy fan but "Run The Club" grew on me for some reason. I could say the same for Boosie on "Iron Man". Shit got that bounce to it. The one track I had on rewind was "Catch Me If You Can". Jody Breeze one of the realest cats to touch a MIC in the south if you ask me. Did Stat Quo's time pass him by as far as an album goes? It's possible people cause "My Ride" is type corny. I'm not mad at it but it's not your typical Stat Quo song. On some mixtape shit, Gamble did a lil something over Jay Z's "Can I Live". You can def live fam.
AAE and Rokz got some tightening up to do sound quality wise. The joint is cop-able and def has it's high points plus I give credit for at least having a flow to the CD...the vibe was consistent. Most exclusive joints now are just thrown together with no regard for "flow" with the excuse that the consumer doesn't care about that shit but to me that's just another lame explanation for not being true to the craft. Rokz gets it tho and that's important. The drops Rokz used really annoy me. It's just that one dude, he sounds like he does drops for Rick Dee's Weekly Top 40. Maybe other cats dig him but his voice sounds to commercial for mixtapes in my opinion. You can hear the potential to this mixtape series but we'll see where they take it. (5/21/08)
