Ask the mixtape gods and you shall receive...R&B blends. It wasn't too long ago I was complaining about the lack of R&B blends. Now I have quite a few new joints that are filling that void. For those of you not familiar with DJ Rowdy he's proof that you don't need to be all over the internet to be doing your thing. The streets will forever be your foundation. The internet is that extra name branding outlet, some utilize it and some could care less but either way you'll hear/read about it on Rapmullet.com...it's what we do.
The cover has a "Grown & Sexy" advisory on it but for me it should be "Grown & Sloppy" cause truth be told there ain't nothing sexy about me unless your a broad who likes 'em 300+ lbs. Jokes aside, the warning label should read for the "Grown and Mixtape Educated" cause the un-edumacated mixtape opinion is a plague in the game right now. Rowdy sets shit off with Robin Thicke, you know the song..."Lost Without You"...blend is tight tho. You got Robin's soft as a pillow vocals over some hard shit...just how R&B blends should be done. We've all heard "Buy You A Drink" countless times on the radio but Rowdy hold your ear flipping three different beats throughout. Rowdy taking chances too. The "Like A Prayer" blend was a welcome change over some classic Nas. I think you could blend the beat from "Planet Rock" with any R&B and the shit will pop off. Rowdy blended it with "Ice Box" and I found myself listening to a song that I used to despise. The joint that had me buggin' out in whip was "A Little Bit Of Love"...can never go wrong fucking with the classics; and Rowdy is keeping shit moving around 1-2 minutes long just like a true mixtape vet. When "Back To Life" hit and then "Once In A Lifetime Groove"...shit, for get about it...I was 90 miles an hour deep in the fast lane without a care in the world. Hands down tho the best part of the CD to me was when Rowdy slowed shit down with "Let's Wait Awhile" and the classic "If I Ever Fall In Love" by Shai. This blend had some ill ass bounce to it man, the horns were killing it!
This is how R&B blends should be done. Rowdy hits from all angles; new shit, classics, and the knowledge that all you need is 1:30 average track length to keep the listener glued to the CD. Hit Rowdy up at ww.myspace.com/rowdybeats and see what's really good. Remember, good mixtapes aren't always on your favorite mixtape website (except Rapmullet of course), sometimes you got to dig but you'll be glad you dug. (6/23/07)
