Ladies need a night of their own...just to get them out the damn house! Seriously, tho...get the fuck out. Hahaha. No for real, tho...get out. lol DJ Babe is back with another unique mixtape release. It's all about the niche you occupy these days not what the majority is dropping for projects. To say Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill are eccentric is an understatement, Jill Scott...who knows but she gets it in vocally better then the first two...in my opinion.
I miss Lauryn Hill tho. She was versatile, singing and rhyming and the message was always proper. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" was the wheel when it dropped. I could say the same for Erykah with "On and On". Her whole first album stayed in heavy rotation like the CD was stuck in my CD player. If you break it down to the essence that beat is knocking like an Asian gang bang. Don't front either, you know you wanted to bust a nut on her big ass afro. "Hate On Me" is the shit. The way the track builds and then the beat drops and you almost want to start swinging elbows. "Sweetest Thing" is one of Lauryn's rare jewels. The video made no sense to me but that joint will have you mesmerized...eyes low fresh off a sack type music. "Bag Lady" is knocking too, don't Zzzzz. Many and MC flipped that beat but the original is still funky like dirty socks and corn chips.
If you notice, the common denominator with these three artists is the perfect marriage of beats, content and soul. You rarely get all three of those today...shame. Mixtape wise the joint is cool, transitions were "ok", no real mixing but smooth nonetheless. I like the overall vibe tho and truth be told I felt good after listening to it a few times. This is that cool out music that shit to vibe to and keep your girl in a good mood too. (3/29/08)
